Mansfield boss Nigel Clough delighted with first win of season at Chesterfield

Mansfield boss Nigel Clough was delighted with his side’s first win of the season, coming in a 2-0 victory at local rivals Chesterfield in the Carabao Cup.

Goals from Rhys Oates and Will Evans in either half sent Mansfield into the second round.

Clough said: “They’ve got a good squad and a good team and we restricted them to very few opportunities in the second half.

“It was a good team goal for the first goal. It’s lovely for him (Oates) to get off the mark.

“I think the second goal deflated them. It was a great finish from Will. I thought he was excellent in the two different positions he played.

“It gives us a platform. We need to get some points on the board on Saturday. You’ve got to keep on working and hopefully you’ll get your rewards.”

Chesterfield manager Paul Cook expressed his disappointment with the result.

He said: “It’s disappointing to lose the game, it’s a big local derby. Mansfield have won the game, and you have to take your hat off to them and say ‘well done’. We can lick our wounds and concentrate on the league now.

“The most disappointing part of the evening for us is conceding the second goal.

“We weren’t under pressure in the game, and it was whether we could equalise, or open them up to get that chance. The second goal has probably taken the life out of our players.

“It’s been our Achilles heel for a period, and we’ve got to make sure going forward that we keep that back door shut.”
