Conor Hourihane thrilled by Barnsley reaction after FA Cup win over Peterborough

Barnsley boss Conor Hourihane was proud as punch after his side booked their place in the FA Cup third round with a 1-0 win at Peterborough.

The Tykes chief demanded a response after his side’s 5-0 humbling against Port Vale in the EFL Trophy last time out.

Patrick Kelly came off the bench to score the only goal of the game with 15 minutes to go at London Road.

Barnsley had to withstand a late surge from Posh but held firm to give themselves a chance at a money-spinning tie.

And Hourihane said: “I’m really, really pleased. I asked the lads for a reaction off the back of Tuesday’s result and they were outstanding.

“The only slight bit was I thought it should have been three or four given the amount of chances we had.

“I just thought we needed to show a little bit more care in and around the final third.

“They were brilliant and great there at the end [when the onslaught came] but as I say we shouldn’t have to defend like that for the last 10 minutes if we take our chances.

“That’s why you show that killer instinct by going and getting two or three then the last 10 minutes become a calm, non event.

“I’m really proud of the group. All in all we’re pleased.”

Posh slumped to their fourth straight defeat as they failed to reach the third round for the first time in three seasons.

And following a flat performance, boss Luke Williams said: “We were outclassed.

“We struggled to get to grips with the opposition from the beginning. They were better than us. They had more guile, more know-how.

“The only way we can combat that is real intensity to try and make it unsettling for good players, but we didn’t have enough aggression to disrupt them.

“Their quality shone through in the end. They were calmer and managed to pick through us. They found a way and they punished us.
